130 little
Buddhas for what ails you
Toronto artist
Mitch Robertson creates souvenirs of a pop culture in doll portraits
and identical plaster buddhas, and they can be yours at Dare-Dare,
460 Ste. Catherine St. W, Room 505. Focusing on our obsession with
"fame, beauty, wealth, and collectibles," the 24-year-old
artist has started a mass-produced collection, his own "precious
art museum." The exhibition is composed of 10 framed works
Famous™ doll portraits - and 130 Famous™ buddhas. The
little garishly painted buddhas and the printouts taken from advertisements
for porcelain dolls from Chatelaine and Good Housekeeping make for
a wild combination, but humour is the glue. This is Robertson's
15 minutes of fame, and everyone is welcome to join in. Art with
tongue in cheek, Famous™ continues until Nov 29.
